Cancellieri Displays Glimpses of Brilliance in Silver Lining for Unstable Lazio

The mood at the Stadio Olimpico was anything but joyful on Saturday afternoon. The home side was losing against Torino, a side that had let in 10 goals while netting just two in their previous five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their latest protest in an ongoing feud with chairman Claudio Lotito.

A Season Unraveling?

Was the team's progress coming unstitched, or had there never been any cohesion keeping it intact from the beginning? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri as head coach during the off-season, only for him to later acknowledge that the board had failed to disclose the transfer ban they were facing for fiscal problems. Rumours that he could resign were unfounded, but he did say that Lotito had "deceived" him.

The Biancocelesti appeared equally disorganized during matches as behind the scenes, defeating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but being defeated in the remaining opening fixtures, which included the capital clash. At any given moment, it's been difficult to ascertain if progress is being made or collapsing.

Cancellieri's Surprising Comeback

At least one man remained positive amid the chaos. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to be at Lazio this year. He spent last season on loan at Parma and, at the start of the off-season, his parent club were pushing for him to stay there for another season. The signing restriction necessitated a reconsideration. They were unable to reduce their roster lacking backup options.

He signed initially when Sarri was last in charge, back then just 20 years old product of Verona's academy. He accumulated 20 matches in the league with the club in 2022-23, the vast majority of those from the bench. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended after that campaign, later stated Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri was destined for stardom only to bench him consistently."

Finding His True Position

Maybe Sarri was continuing to attempt to identify the nature of his skill set. Billed as a wide forward upon signing, Cancellieri instead found himself most of that campaign as an unconvincing alternative to Ciro Immobile at No 9. Across 63 games while playing for Empoli and Parma in the past two years, his tally was seven goals. Shoehorn
