Comeback Medvedev Wins First Championship in Over Two Years
Nineteen of the Russian's 21 championships have been achieved on hardcourt
A comeback the Russian player won his initial championship for 882 days with a win over Corentin Moutet in the Almaty Open championship match.
Medvedev, a ex- number one, has experienced a torrid year, winning just a single victory at the Grand Slams and undergoing a meltdown at the American major.
Medvedev's unpredictability on the professional circuit - and struggles with his serve in specific - led to him falling of the world's top 10 and ultimately parting ways with former trainer Cervara.
Currently working with Johansson and Goetzke, the tennis star has gradually improved in the last few weeks - peaking in a tightly fought competitive win over challenger Corentin Moutet.
This represents Medvedev's first title after the Rome competition and first on a hardcourt after March of that year.
Victory also means Medvedev has won 21 titles at 21 various competitions.
"For the first time I am participating in a competition with my children together, so to win a championship is especially meaningful," stated ranked player Medvedev.
"This championship is in honour of my younger daughter her name, because the maiden victory I won when my child Alisa was delivered was for her."
The athlete, the former major winner, had been defeated in his past six championship matches, including in the German tournament previously this season.
The player's counter-punching play style and recurring outbursts on the tennis court had prompted some to doubt if his ability to play at the highest level was over.
Yet the player has implemented adjustments in the last few weeks, making an effort to approach the net and compete positively, backed up by an improved serve.
He recovered from a disadvantage in the first set against the challenging Moutet, winning 4 of the concluding five points to take the lead.
Both players swapped break points in the following set before the Frenchman, attempting for his maiden tour title, gained dominance to push for a decider.
The opponent defended four initial opportunities in a close third set before the Russian won the break to 15 to serve for the match.
Appropriately, Medvedev secured victory with a shot at the net, with Moutet incapable to manage a return after a lengthy match.
