Jair Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities determined he posed a definite escape threat while under house arrest.

The one-time leader was convicted of orchestrating a armed takeover in the ninth month and handed more than over two decades in incarceration, but he continued under house arrest pending appeals.

Top Judicial Official the presiding justice said the action to imprison the elderly politician was a precautionary step after "new facts" came to light.

This encompassed attempting to break his tracking device and a summons to a demonstration that could facilitate a possible escape.

Judicial Records Show Escape Risks

In a paperwork permitting the arrest, Justice Moraes said data from the unit overseeing his home detention suggested the one-time head of state's aim to disable the tracking monitor to ensure success in his flight.

This, it said, would be made easier by the disorder caused by the gathering called by his child.

His son, Flávio, who holds office as a legislator, called for a gathering of his supporters near his father's house to take place on Saturday evening.

His son wrote on online platforms on Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your country, or watch it all from your phone there on your settee? I invite you to battle with us."

He said the gathering would be so supporters could seek divine intervention for his health and for the restoration of democratic rule in our country."

Diplomatic Refuge Fears

Part of Justice Moraes's ruling was the possibility of the former president's "relocation to embassies near the home, considering that the investigations revealed a history of planning to seek refuge through a diplomatic representation", a announcement said.

The court filing emphasizes that the US embassy in the national capital, Brasilia, is positioned around 8 miles from Bolsonaro's home.

Global Responses

His judicial problems have drawn the ire of fellow populist conservative American leader President Trump, prompting him to impose a fifty percent tax on Brazilian product imports.

He is being kept in a Federal Police station in Brasilia and will undergo a custody hearing on the following day.

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on last Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Supreme Court to permit him to serve his whole jail sentence under domestic detention, with tracking devices.

They also requested that Bolsonaro be permitted to depart his residence for medical care, saying he demanded frequent medical attention for pulmonary infections and other ailments.

Context of Sentencing

He was convicted of orchestrating a plot aimed at keeping him in power after he lost the 2022 election to his left-wing rival, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Supreme Court justices said that he knew of a scheme which involved plans to murder his opponent and his vice-presidential running mate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to detain and kill Justice Moraes - the top judicial official who has been overseeing Bolsonaro's trial.

The conspiracy was thwarted because it didn't receive the endorsement of the armed forces officials. The current president was inaugurated without incident on January 1st, 2023.

But a seven days after, on January 8th, thousands of his followers invaded and destroyed government buildings in the national capital, Brazil's capital.

The security forces intervened and around approximately 1,500 persons were detained.

The justices found that the protesters had been incited by him whose scheme, they said, was for the country's army to step in, reestablish control and bring him back to power.

At the time, the legal team called the decades-long sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also banned from running for public office until 2060 - a decade minus two years after the end of his sentence.

The one-time head of state called the court case a political persecution and said it was aimed at blocking him running in the next presidential race.
