Pat Cummins Poised for a Key Part in Ashes Series

The Australian skipper has secured over 300 dismissals in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.

Australia's chief selector Bailey has stated that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's historic rivalry.

Speculation had been growing that the veteran bowler might be unavailable due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.

Earlier indications from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding whether he would play, with the Test matches kicking off on the 21st of November in the WACA.

He revealed that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about the prospects of being involved.

"It's clear that the clock is ticking and various factors involved, aside from the back issue, but other factors as well," the selector added.

"It's positive. We firmly believe that he will feature a major part. With luck it's the first Test. If not, we'll reassess."

Injury History

The captain missed the white-ball matches against India and New Zealand recently after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.

He has a history of spinal problems, with flare-ups in several earlier campaigns forcing him out of several home seasons in a limited period.

Cummins stated he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his rehabilitation process to secure his spot for the contest.

He mentioned that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his comeback but conceded it was "pressing" for him to regain fitness for the initial match.

Backup Options

Should Cummins not be fit, veteran batsman Smith will lead the side.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.

He labeled it as a "slight concern and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to be ready to bowl."

"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to take part for the first Test as an dual-role player," he elaborated.

"He was only going to play the initial matches regardless. The way he swings the willow in shorter formats, if it causes any delay for 24 more hours, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
