Person pleads guilty to sexual crimes targeting boys at youth camp
An individual who contaminated treats with sleeping medication and provided them to children at a youth camp in Leicestershire has admitted sexual offences against two young males aged nine and 10.
Jon Ruben was taken into custody after eight children and a grown-up became sick at the location in mid-summer.
The elderly man, from the Nottinghamshire area, pleaded guilty to a series of 17 offences when he stood at the judicial center on Friday.
Nevertheless, he denied one particular crime he was accused of, which was concerning a nine-year-old boy.
The defendant was held in detention ahead of a subsequent court date on November 28th.
'Sweet game'
Mary Prior KC, prosecuting, described the criminal behavior to the court.
She explained his victims were children from difficult backgrounds who were participating in a youth camp which he ran.
The man played a "candy game" with the children, the prosecutor stated, in which he would enter the boys' rooms when they were settling down and tell them to ingest treats "rapidly".
She told the court the man had conducted this practice with the children "over an extended period", and children had previously fallen ill the following morning.
She explained the man had been capable of justifying this for many years as the children being "overwrought by enjoyment", until his stepchild had worries in recently.
The legal representative added: "Recently" his stepson had worries about what was going on, for good reason.
"They chose" to have a look in the individual's items."
The legal counsel explained materials including infant oil, Vaseline and medical needles were discovered, and his stepson contacted the police about his worries.
She said the man went on to engage in the "sweet game" with six youngsters that evening - July 26th - and they were all sick the next day.
"The police had not arrived by that point," she added.
The oversight body, the police conduct office, previously told that it was reviewing law enforcement's management of the incident.
The prosecutor explained the minors were unable to walk properly due to their sickness, so Ruben's stepson called the police a second time.
She stated the defendant then engaged in the "treat game" in a space of five youngsters.
